Katarina Wit started skating when she was age five. Soon, her talents began to emerge and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. Coach Jutta was also at the school. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. After that, she began dominating the sport with her elegance and grace. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's silver medal for figure skating in a close-fought competition. A more competitive contest afterward, she was awarded the medal. In fact, she did not win the free-skating contest, but won gold based on performances during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt was the only female ever since Sonja Haenie who was the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. While she did not take home a single gold medal, she delighted fans with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
